This is my editorial map, not a popularity chart or a claim about community consensus. Each section below is a shelf, each shelf opens with what that corner of M/M romance is actually doing, and each entry says in one line who I think the book is for.
I write in this genre, so some of these are mine. They are marked clearly and shelved beside books by other authors. The literary shelf is adjacent to genre romance: those books may center love without making romance's HEA or HFN promise.

M/M romance is a romance genre in which the central love story is between two men and the book ends on a happy or hopeful note. The label describes the pairing, not the heat level or the setting: an M/M romance can be a closed-door small-town comedy, a Regency spy novel, or an explicit monster romance. What it shares with the rest of the romance genre is the promise that the relationship is the plot rather than the subplot.
BL, or boys' love, is a Japanese publishing category with its own visual conventions, publishing formats, and reader expectations, most often manga or light novels. M/M romance is a Western prose-fiction category that grew out of the romance industry. They overlap in subject matter and many readers move between them, but they are different traditions with different pacing, art, and consent conventions—so recommendations do not always travel cleanly between the two.
It varies by book and it is usually signposted. Sweet or closed-door M/M keeps sex off the page. Most mainstream contemporary M/M sits in the middle: explicit but not the point. High-heat and kink-forward M/M is explicit by design and generally labeled that way by the author. On this site the High Heat shelf marks the explicit end of the catalog, and the Literary shelf marks the quieter end.
